Yes, they are important, but not all Meta tags can help you in SEO.
The most useful and important Meta tags,in my opinion, are title tag, meta description,canonical tag and alt tag.Also there are Robots meta tags and social media meta tags.
So Meta tags tell the search engine what the page is about, so it is important for SEO.
