Because of what we see in movies, it’s easy to assume that there is always a dress code for playing golf. While that is often the case, you’ll still find a lot of municipal courses that do not have dress codes.

Generally, you’ll only need shorts/slacks (golf skirts for women) and a collared shirt to enter most golf courses. Typically, the lower the fees, the less strict the course is in its dress code. You can expect a no-denim, no shorts rules in private, luxury courses.

If you’re just starting out, especially if you have a limited budget, it’s best to pick courses that do not have dress codes. The last thing you want is to spend your money on attire when you can use it to buy other useful items such as a rangefinder or a handheld golf GPS to improve your game.
